A Dark Mafia Romance (Valeri Mafia)

The pretty little angel fell right into my lap.

Time to show her how deep the darkness goes.

It’s been a bad night for Cora Jones. It’s about to get so much worse.

She thinks the man who snatched her from that alley and sold her to a brute is the worst man alive.

But he isn’t. Not even close.

  Not compared to me.

I’m Andrei Valeri, don of the Valeri mafia. And when I see Cora on that auction stage, I know one thing only:

  I have to have her.

It costs me a lot to make her mine.

But in the end, it will be worth it.

Because Cora belongs to me now.

And I know just how to make this angel sing.

  1

There was nothing quite like freedom. Nothing. Ever since I got my own place in the city, I had been living life exactly as I was meant to live it—my way. My great aunt was no longer around to set curfews and stupid rules. Teachers no longer harassed me for missed assignments. My boss could be a pain in the ass sometimes, but once my shift was over, I was free to do whatever the hell I wanted. And let me tell you, it was fucking amazing.

Take tonight, for example. A year ago, I would have been stuck in my bedroom studying for the SATs or something, but now? It was party central!

“C’mon, girl!” My best friend, Lily, was practically dragging me out from the passenger side of the car. “The line is enormous, and I don’t want to be waiting in it all night long!” She tugged on my arm with all her might, but it didn’t do much of anything.

Lily was by every definition of the word, a pixie. She was petite, had fair moonlit skin, and even had a pixie haircut that complimented her jaw bone to literal perfection. If I weren’t the kind of girl who liked herself a strong, well-built man, her boyfriend, George, would’ve had to fight me for her.

“You’re going to dislocate my shoulder,” I said as I pivoted in my seat and stuck a long, curvy leg outside the car.

The heel of my shoe clicked against the asphalt as I rose to my full height, towering above my friend. As always, she had to crane her neck to look me in the eye.

  “Well, stop dragging your ass.”

“Sorry, honey, there’s a lot of it,” I said with a flourish of my hand towards my backside.

We shared a laugh and finally made our way to the line.

“I hear this is the best nightclub in town. It’s only been open for a month, and it’s been packed ever since.”

Lily was the bouncy sort that could never keep herself still. I watched as she rocked on the balls of her feet. Her boyfriend had his hands on her hips, trying to limit her range of motion, but it wasn’t working all that well.

“All I’m saying is that there better be some damned good music in there because I feel like dancing!”

A few other members of our friend group hollered in agreement.

  “And cheap booze, too.”

The whoops were even louder this time.

The summer weather had brought with it the humidity that I hated oh so very much. The air was so sticky and gross that it made me want to gag and I didn’t even gag in the bedroom.

As we waited for the line to inch forward, I peeled some sweat-soaked hair from the back of my neck. My natural beach waves had gone from sleek and shiny to ultimate frizz, and there was nothing I could do about it, aside from trying to rock the “I just rolled out of bed” look.

Lily elbowed me. “So, what do you think? Are you going to get lucky tonight?”

  “I certainly hope so.”

“Want me to be your wing woman?”

I was tempted to take her up on the offer, but I saw the hungered look on her boyfriend’s face and knew better than to get between those two sex-crazed freaks.

“Actually, I think I’m going to play it solo today and see where luck takes me.”

  “Are you sure?”

“Do these hips lie?” I asked as I ran my hands along the curves of my body, then did a little shimmy. “I hardly think I’ll have a hard time finding myself a man.”

“You’ll probably have a harder time trying to get rid of the creeps. They are the literal worst,” chimed in Madison, the redhead of the group. “Seriously, some guys don’t know the meaning of the word ‘no’. It's super annoying.”
<
br />   “Tell me about it,” I agreed. “Some guys just can’t get it through their thick skulls that some of us girls have something called standards.”

“Preach, girl, preach.” Lily snapped her fingers.

All our chitchat made the wait much more bearable. Without even realizing it, we had inched our way to the front of the building.

“IDs,” said the bouncer with a stern looking expression.

He seemed like the no-bullshit kind of guy, and I feared that even my signature flutter of the eyelashes would do nothing to sway him. He scrutinized our fakes with eyes that were beady and dark. I no longer knew whether the beads of sweat lining the back of my neck was due to the humidity or the intensity of his stare.

As a collective group, we all released a sigh of relief once we made it over the threshold and into the neon-colored room. It was filled wall to wall with beautiful people. Most of them were clumped together on the dance floor, their bodies moving in time with the beat that vibrated through my feet. Others hugged the bar, giggling over the bends of their straws.

Lily dragged her boyfriend to some dark corner. She wore that vixen look of hers whenever she was planning to do something naughty. I chuckled under my breath. George was about to become one lucky man.

The rest of the group dispersed in different directions.

“And then there was one…” I whispered to myself as I made my way over to the bar.

Already, with a few swings of my hips, I had caught the attention of a fair share of hungry eyes. Their hunger was so deep that I almost felt the bite of their teeth against my backside. Well, if they wanted a piece of me, then they would need to come and get it. I was the kind of girl you worked for—I didn’t make it easy.

I sat down and ordered a drink. As I enjoyed the fruity cocktail, I watched some of my friends grinding it out on the dance floor and knew that I needed to join them. So, I abandoned the rest of my drink and headed towards the tangle of limbs with only a slight buzz, and maybe that was a good thing because I felt everything—and I mean everything.

That cute guy rubbing up on me? I felt exactly what he was packing. The girl I was chest to chest with? I felt the bounce of her boobs against mine. Every hand. Every touch. The tingle of a hot breath down my neck. Oh, there is really nothing like the feeling of being sardined between a hundred different strangers. It just fills you with a sense of exhilaration that almost makes it hard to breathe—that’s how alive you become.

I rode on that high as long as I could until, finally, fatigue washed over me, and I stumbled back to the bar. This time, I settled on my stool and enjoyed my drink as it slipped down my throat and warmed my entire body from the inside out. I neared the bottom of my glass when someone sat down in the seat next to mine.

“Mind if I buy you a drink?” He’d leaned in really close to whisper that question into my ear.

His voice held a hint of husk to it that found its way into my spine and up into my chest. Mmm, this guy had a porn star whisper if I had ever heard one. I turned my head to see what I was working with and found that he wasn’t all that bad looking. Albeit, maybe a little plain, but nothing to complain about.

“I never say no to a free drink,” I answered.

  “What will it be?”

I studied the glass in his hand. He seemed like a whiskey sort of guy, and I was prepared to meet him head-on.

“Crown Royal, on the rocks,” I said.

  He raised his eyebrows.

I smirked. “What? Haven’t you seen a girl drink whiskey before?”

“Never one so beautiful,” he answered without an ounce of hesitation.

  Oh, this guy was smooth.

“Coming right out of the gate with compliments, huh?”

“I only speak the truth,” he said as he raised his hands in an act of innocence.

“So, tell me, when you’re not buying a girl a drink at the bar, what do you do?”

  “What do I do?”

“You have a job, don’t you?”

Rule number one: make sure the guy hitting on you isn’t some deadbeat loser.

  “Oh, that. Yes.”

“Are you sure? You don’t sound very confident.”

“I suppose you could say that I am not very fond of my job.”

He rubbed the back of his neck, and it stretched the fabric of his shirt across his biceps. They were pretty well defined. By the looks of it, this stranger of mine was no stranger to the gym. Mmm, he was getting better and better. Perhaps tonight was the night I would get lucky. I crossed my fingers underneath the counter as I waited for him to elaborate.

“I’m a stockbroker,” he said at last like it was a curse that had banished him straight to hell or something.

“Hey, that’s a good paying job, isn’t it?” I found that I had to saddle up really close in order to hear him properly over the deafening music.

“Good paying, yes. Soul crushing, also yes.”

I laughed. “Have you considered doing something else?”

  He shrugged.

“Life is too short to do something you hate.”

“And what is it that you do?” he asked pointedly like he was trying to steer the conversation away from himself.

“I work at a record shop and write articles as a freelancer whenever I have the time.”

  “Records, huh? Music buff?”

“Hmm?” I positioned my stool so that it was even closer to his.

At this point, our knees were pressed together, and his fingertips came to rest against my skin. I thought he would withdraw his hand, but he never did. Instead, he kept it exactly where it was, and I didn’t mind one bit.

“I asked whether you were a music buff,” he repeated, a little louder this time.

“Oh, definitely,” I answered. “I’m a big fan of classic rock. Led Zeppelin. The Beatles. The Rolling Stones.”

He nodded with every band I listed off on my fingers. “So, you’re from the area, yeah?”

“Yeah.” I finished off my drink and pushed the empty glass towards the bartender for a refill. “I’ve been here for about six months now.”

He placed his hand to his ear to signal that he was having a hard time hearing me. I was just about to repeat myself, but he tilted his head towards the door, miming that we should leave together.

Frankly, I did not have the time to process his offer because, at that moment, Lily showed up at my elbow. She yanked on it, her eyes unnaturally wide.

“What is it?” I asked as I wobbled to my feet.

“It’s Madison. She got herself into a drinking contest—”

  “But she’s a lightweight.” .

“Yeah, exactly. She’s throwing up outside. George is with her.”

“I’m sorry, but I’ve got to go,” I told the man.

It was clear that he was disappointed and maybe even a little angry. He opened his mouth to say something, but Lily towed me towards the door.

I looked over my shoulder as he glared at his drink. I felt bad, sure, but my friends came first.

  Always.

Outside, the air remained hot and sticky. It was like walking into an oven, and already, I yearned for the air conditioning that awaited me inside.

“Okay, where is she?” I asked, but I was answered by the sound of retching.

Madison was doubled over and throwing up all over a helpless bush.

“We should call her a taxi,” I said.

“Right…” Lily ran her fingers through her hair, pushing a few sweaty strands from her forehead. “Why didn’t I think of that?”

“It’s alright, babe. You did the right thing by finding me.”

“You always know what to do,” she whispered. “This group would be lost without you.”

I laughed. “You’re right about that one.”

Madison looked like she had just crawled out of a morgue. Her face was drained of all color, and it was made even worse by the darkness of her hair.

  “Hey,
are you okay?” I asked in a soft voice as I rubbed the small of her back, trying to be as gentle as possible. “We’re going to get you home safe and sound, alright?”

“The taxi will be here in a minute,” announced George.

“Do you want me to go home with you?” I asked Madison.

She shook her head. “No, I’ll be okay.”

“You’re pretty fucked up, girl. You sure?” Lily said.

I took the water bottle that Lily offered us and held it to Madison’s lips. She tried to put up a fuss, but I persisted.

“This will take the edge off your drunkenness and make you feel better,” I said. “So, quit being such a pain in my ass.”

This time she complied and chugged back the entire bottle like she was some sort of fish that had been deprived of water.

  “That’s a good girl,” I cooed.

“You don’t have to treat me like a baby, Cora,” she whined.

“Well, maybe when you stop making stupid decisions, I’ll consider it,” I said, voice stern.

The taxi arrived. George and I helped Madison to her feet and got her into the back of the cab without too much drama. I waved her off and turned to the rest of my friends.
